The CORE 9 Person Extended Dome Tent. Measuring 12' by 9' by 72" height at the center, this Large Family dome tent is big enough to accommodate 3 queen size air mattresses. It is however most comfortable with 2 adults and 2 children. This will also leave you room to store your gear for your family camping vacation while allowing use of its very spacious and comfortable interior.
First thing to do is set it up. In under 10 minutes, you can have this Large Family dome tent assembled. Easy and simple, it only takes one person to complete the setup, however 2 people is always better as it will put less stress on the poles, leading to a long lifetime of use.
Once up, you will notice some additional items that will help improve your experience. First, with the rainfly off you will notice the mesh ceiling allowing ventilation and a view of the moon and stars. Also you will note hanging hooks so you can hang and lantern or fan. In addition this tent comes with pockets for storage of valuable items as well as keeping them dry in wet weather. One note here is that you do need to be careful to align the rainfly properly or it will allow water in the tent and also allow water to wick into the storage pockets.
With the center being 72", you will notice that you can stand up in the center of the Large Family Dome Tent. This is an amazing plus for a dome tent because with smaller units, there is no way for you to stand tall.
Another bonus item is the inclusion of a waterproof entry point for a power cord. In today's world, most of us use power even on our camping vacations, whether it be a phone, fan or radio, this port will allow you to bring the power in and keep the water out. How cool is that.
Finally, coming in at 22 pounds, it is still light enough to take with you on your hiking or camping trip. As always, it comes with a storage bag for your convenience, however, with most, it would be nice if the bag with 20 percent larger making it easier to store the unit in the bag.
So coming in at around $130 on Amazon, this is value for a large amount of tent for limited money. Put that with the bonuses of Amazon and their shipping and customer service, you will be getting a great value.
However, after researching many customer purchases, there are few shortcomings with this tent. First, the zipper for the main door Is a poor design. The pole location causes stress on the upper corner of the door so the zipper is taunt or gets caught basically locking you out of the tent. Not good and bad weather. Customers have tried adjusting the stakes and footprint, but this issue still remains. This did also cause a couple of instances where the zipper seam split, making it not waterproof at the door. Getting snagged on the rainfly also seems to be a common complaint, however, properly adjusting the rainfly does help.
Larger and stronger poles and strings would solve the next complaint. Several reviews that the polls that are made of fiberglass either break or the strings that hold them together snap. This is a big problem during setup. The manufacturer has been excellent in replacing these parts, but this doesn't solve the problem when you're in the middle of nowhere camping. The rating for this tent is 4.3 out of 5 stars. The main cause of this reduced rating is almost entirely to do with this item. Improving the poles would make this tent invincible.
The non-self adjusting rainfly is another item of concern. While this is large and does cover the tent and keeps the rain out. However, you have to pay special attention to be sure it is properly aligned otherwise it will not properly cover the windows and therefore allow water to leak and penetrate the interior of the tent. So be sure to cover the windows properly.
Another point is that the window needs a zippered cover so that rain does come through during bad weather, especially during strong wind.
Also, with regards to the poles again, strong winds can be a concern, especially due to the overall height of this unit. 25 mph seems to be the cut off here. Under that number, and this tent performs great.
The overall material for the tent also seems thin and should not be used in colder weather. In the other direction, if it is hot, with the rainfly installed, the interior little ventilation. Now granted, with the rainfly off, you have a clear view to the sky and ample ventilation. This is truly awesome in clear weather, leaving you beautiful views from inside the bug free area. Finally, the overall construction seems thin.
The flooring, which is a tarp design and not thick enough. We strongly recommend adding a tarp under the footprint of the tent. This will allow you extra protection from items penetrating the bottom and letting water in. So be vigilant here with regards to you location and set up, this could mean the difference.
This tent does hold up in heavy rain, however there was some minor leakage on the floor and a couple of seams. Overall, it did stay dry in torrential rain. One definite plus is that the the seams on this unit are heat sealed from the rainfly to the ground.
The CORE 9 Person Extended Dome Tent is a great tent. It leads the competition in most categories. Pay attention to the specifics of your tent site and be careful with your poles. Treated right, it will survive and be a valuable piece of equipment in your camping arsenal. Putting a tarp down under it will help insure that the base of the tent remains true. Being very large and spacious does outweigh some of its shortcomings. The price also helps in this area being relatively inexpensive for the size of this unit. This would be a good choice for the occasional camper or the camping enthusiast. A great starter or g tent or a tent for all occasions
