How To Star Gaze While Camping
Updated: Nov 10
There are many fun activities that you can do for camping but one that I wanted to learn more about.
What you need to know before you star gaze while camping is what you need to know and what you need to see. You will need a telescope for seeing the star and a star chart for recognizing what is in the night sky when you are looking at it. You will also want a finder scope and some knowledge about astronomy before you go.
The items that need astronomy can be as complicated or as basic as you want it to be for your trip. I also think that having some prior knowledge before you head out on a trip will immensely useful and entertaining. Of course, a lot of knowledge will depend on your location and the time of year, so you should consider that as well because you will need to know.
How does camping help with stargazing?
The simple answer is that while you can do star gazing at home, the woods' clear skies are often a better vantage point for the activity. Depending on the place you are camping, and the time of year, you will be able to see a variety of stars. Looking at the stars has long been a tradition among campers as it is a fun pastime that doesn't require any power. Some people even go on camping trips exclusively to get better viewpoints of the stars in the night sky.
Star Charts and Constellation Charts.
With a star chart or constellation chart, you will tell what stars or constellations are in the sky as you are looking up at it. Some people like to use standard charts that you can buy off of amazon. Others prefer to use apps right on their phone, and I can't blame them for this because the apps are more convenient than the standard chart, and we have a few of those to recommend to you.
SkyView Lite is made by Terminal Eleven LLC.
SkyView Lite is an incredibly popular app for stargazers as well as junior astronomers. The app works as simple as downloading it and pointing your phone up to the night sky. The app will then automatically detect constellations and point them out to you and let you know about them.
The app has many other features that are great for people who want to learn more about astronomy. For starters, it can point out more than just star constellations. It can point out planets and other bodies. The app can point out man-made satellites like the ISS, which is handy for those who want to know where telescopes and satellites are.
The app does not have many requirements, mostly that you download it. You don't have to be connected to wifi or the internet to get it to work. You can manually input your longitude and latitude if you are disconnected from the internet or a cell network. If you are connected, you will automatically sync your phone to your location and see what is above you.
There are very few complaints about this app. There are only two that I have come across in my research of the app that is worth mentioning. The first is the fact the celestial bodies are slightly off from where they should be on occasion. The other is the fact that the app does seem to have things like meteor showers or comets. I think that this just comes down to the fact that the app probably has a hard time keeping track of the objects in real-time.
While SkyView lite has a paid version, the basic lite version is free. The app is currently available on both the Google Play store and the Apple app store. It is nice to know that whatever hardware you have, you can access this app.
Star Chart is made by Escape Velocity Limited.
Star Chart is an app that works very similarly to SkyView Lite as it is designed to allow the users to look up at the sky with their phone and see information about what is in the sky. This can be anything from constellations to planetary bodies that are in our system and beyond. I think a few extra features are worth looking at and make this app interesting in and of itself.
One of the first things that I like about this app is that you can point it at the ground and see what the sky is like on the other side of the world. This is a cool feature in a few other apps, but I don't remember any of them saying they could look at the ground and see the other side.
Another cool feature is the app lets you visualize what it would be like to go to another planet or moon in this solar system. I think this is a cool way to explore some of the celestial bodies in our solar system. I don't think that this feature was available for planets outside out of our solar system, just the ones that are local to us.
The ability to fast forward or rewind the night sky. You can either rewind or fast forward the universe ten-thousand years in the future or the past. This is not especially relevant for stargazing, and you want to know where the stars have been or where they are going, then this is a great feature.
The chiefest complaints that see with this app seem to be that the scrolling feature doesn't seem to work all the time. The scrolling feature should let someone drag their phone across the sky and gather all of the information they need. Not everyone seems to have this issue, so it may have something to do with the phone or tablet being used.
You don't need to get a telescope to go stargazing, but you can also watch a movie without speakers. Which version do you think is better? A telescope is a useful tool as it allows you to see the heavens from an entirely different viewpoint. Various types vary greatly in both size and price, so I went ahead that picked out a few that I think could be good for beginners.
Gosky 12x55 High Definition Monocular Telescope and Quick Smartphone Holder

The Gosky 12x55 High Definition Monocular Telescope and Quick Smartphone Holder are monocular that you can use for various purposes. You could use it to survey the land around where you are camping, whether that be a forest, desert, or anything in between. You could also use it to watch animals or birds on your trip. Lastly and most importantly, you can use this monocular for stargazing. It might not be as powerful as a traditional telescope but still offers a different perspective.
The Gosky 12x55 High Definition Monocular Telescope works well in the rough and tumbles environment you often find on a camping trip. The device is simple and adjustable so that you can mess around with the range and lenses. The device is waterproof and has a holder for your phone while using it, but there are no electronics, and your phone cannot link to the device.
The general response to this product all around seem to be very positive. While the monocular telescope cannot directly connect to the phone, many people have had great success using it in photography. The few negative remarks made about this product seems to be comparing it to high-end Nikon Binoculars. This is a good monocular, but it cant be compared to the high-end binoculars if you want to enjoy it.

The Gskyer Telescope, 70mm Aperture 400mm AZ Mount Astronomical Refracting Telescope for Kids Beginners, is a telescope for those just starting to get into stargazing. The telescope has a changeable lens so you can replace them if anything happens, such as scratches or breaks. The telescope also comes with an adjustable tripod to see what you want to see when you are star gazing.
One of the more interesting features of this telescope is how you can use it to take pictures of the sky. The telescope has a mount that lets you place your phone's camera right up to the viewing lens, and you can therefore take photos of the stars. A Bluetooth remote is included in the telescope's package to let you take the picture without touching your phone. This means that you don't have to worry that touching the telescope may alter what you are taking a photo of.
