What Are The Best Portable Consoles To Bring Camping?

Updated: Nov 10

Like going camping, but today I like glamping and one of the fun things you can do while glamping is playing video games.

This does raise the question as to what the best portable gaming console is to take camping?

  • GAEMS VANGUARD Personal Gaming Environment for Xbox One S, Xbox One, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360 (Consoles Not Included) - Xbox One

  • The Nintendo Switch 32GB Console Video Games w/ 32GB Memory Card | Neon Red/Neon Blue Joy-Con | 1080p Resolution | 802.11ac WiFi | HDMI | Surround Sound | IR Motion Camera

  • The Acer Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop, 9th Gen Intel Core i5-9300H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650, 15.6" Full HD IPS Display, 8GB DDR4, 256GB NVMe SSD, WiFi 6, Backlit Keyboard, Alexa Built-in, AN515-54-5812

The question then becomes what kind of games are you planning to play while on your camping trip. If you are into high-end triple games, you will need either a gaming laptop or a high-end console. Interested in basic games like turn-based games or simple RPGs, then a Nintendo ds will probably be able to fill your need. Are you into classic games? Then the more traditional Gameboy be more your speed. Each of these options has its pros or cons, depending on the model and what type of camping you are doing.

Pros

  • Access to a wide variety of high-end games

  • Great graphics

  • Is mostly self-contained

Cons

  • Needs extra equipment to function at peak performance

  • Heavy

I love the idea of the GAEMS VANGUARD Personal Gaming Environment, and in practice, I think it is a very good way to have the full gaming experience on the road. The case works very much like a briefcase where you place your chosen console, and yes, this case will take both the Xbox one or ps4, among other models. The case even comes with a storage section that allows you to store everything from controllers to batteries and any other supplies that you may need for your gaming.

The biggest drawback of this particular form of gaming is that it does not have its power supply. This is only a problem if you do not have access to power at your campsite. This isn't an issue if you are staying in a campground with access to an electric hookup. If you are roughing it without access to electricity, you will need a few extra pieces.

You will need a battery power supply of some kind so that you can run the game. You are also going to need a generator to refill the power that you have used. Suppose you are really lucky to find these in a convenient package where they are together. If you are really lucky, then you could find these in a solar form so that everything is self-contained. If more than just your games need power, I would also recommend taking a look at our generator list to find some good 10,000 kW generators.

The last thing that I wanted to talk about before I move on is that you should take extra care with your equipment if you choose this method. These are sensitive pieces of equipment that were not meant to be taken into the outside world. The case should do a reasonably good job of protecting your gear from the elements but still take extra precautions. Wrapping your case in either a tarp or a sleeping bag should help give that extra measure of security that you need.

Pros

  • Portable

  • Nice graphics

  • Great games

Cons

  • Still expensive

  • Can only access Nintendo games

The Nintendo switch is a significant leap forward when it comes to gaming. It is a portable gaming system that can play real console games. I would have loved something like this when I was a kid. I loved the Gameboy and Nintendo ds, but having real console games anywhere you want the ultimate dream.

I think that the Switch is an excellent choice for those looking to play games while camping. Its small size and minimal charging requirements were making it a very appealing choice whether you are caping in a campground or rushing it. Since the Switch requires physical games to play with the option to use digital games, you choose how you would like to store and transport your game collection.

I also believe that you should use a standard power bank to charge the Switch just as you would for your phone. There are extra points if you use a solar powered power bank to constantly be able to charge your power bank while charging your device.

The one thing that I think should be stated with the Nintendo Switch is that you should pick out a really good case for your Switch. A really good switch case will not only provide good protection for your Switch while you are camping but also have plenty of room for storing your game. I have seen some cases that will have twenty-four or more card slots for your games, so you have plenty of them for the trip.

Pros

  • Access to a wide variety of high-end games

  • Great graphics

  • Portable

Cons

  • Can be heavier than some options

  • Can get hot

  • Requires a recharging system

Another great choice for your gaming needs on a camping trip is to use a gaming laptop. Gaming laptops are fantastic pieces of equipment that let you play great games anywhere you want, whenever you want. The Acer Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop is an excellent gaming laptop that comes well-reviewed from those that own it.

The Acer Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop uses an Intel Core i5 processor, which means that you should play some very good games on the computer. In general, keeping an eye for a computer with an i7 processor would be better, and there is a version with the i7 processor, but it is more expensive.

Either way that you choose to get your laptop, there will be various games that you could play on the laptop. The laptop has a good amount of storage with 256gb of storage, so you can fit quite a few games on said storage. The pc also has 6gb of VRAM available, so you will get good use of the games you do have.

One of the things that you should be aware of if you go the gaming laptop route is the fact that the computer will drain its battery very fast when you are playing games. To recharge the laptop, you could hook it up to a charging station or generator. There are even solar chargers for computers now, which removes the restrictions of needing to hook it up to a stationary power source.

As I have mentioned in the other entries on this list, it is important to keep in mind that you have to protect your computer from the elements. Keep it in the computer bag when not in use or charging, and try and to keep that bag in your tent to keep it out of risk as much as possible.

That was my list of the portable consoles to bring on a camping trip. I hope that this article helps you pick out the best way for you to play video games while camping.
